PILIBHIT: A 30-year-old woman was allegedly killed in Adauli village under the jurisdiction of Jahanabad police station on Friday night over dowry.
The police have booked her husband and his younger brother on charges of murder and causing hurt.
The victim's father alleged that she was forced to consume poison. Lal Singh, a resident of Guari village in Bareilly, said in his complaint that his daughter Nirvesh Kumari got married to one Janki Prasad eight years ago.
Despite him giving adequate dowry in the marriage, his daughter was subjected to physical and mental torture for an additional dowry worth Rs 2 lakh.
He tried to get the matter resolved through the mediation of respectable persons in society but to no avail. Finally, Kumari was compelled to consume poison. He rushed to his daughter’s home soon after getting the information. She succumbed on her way to the hospital, Singh said.
SHO Prabhash Chandra said that the two named accused were booked under IPC section 302 (murder), 328 (administering to any person any poison or any stupefying, intoxicating or unwholesome drug, or other things with the intent to cause hurt), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 498 A (subjecting a woman to cruelty) and appropriate sections of prohibition of dowry act.
"The entire family of the accused has been at large," he added.
